In a world in which those in poverty and persons of color are much more likely to experience environmental injustice, what will it take to attain environmental justice and ensure that all persons have access to clean water, clean air, and nutritious food. Combining two near and dear Unitarian Universalist services, Earth Day and our flower communion, we ask everyone to bring at least one flower to share. Discussion will be on how plastic is not evil, but needs to be honored in what it offers to us as well as how we can rethink, renew, reduce, reuse, recycle, and upcycle! The story for Last Night at the Telegraph Club was first published by Malinda Lo in an anthology as a short story, named “New Year”. Lo came up with the idea for it when she heard about the lesbian bars that operated in North Beach, near San Francisco’s Chinatown. She spent three years writing the book. During her research for the book, Lo visited the GLBT Historical Society. The author also drew from her own experience going to lesbian bars to write some of the scenes. In November 2021, the National Book Foundation announced Last Night at the Telegraph Club had received the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. This was the first time a young adult book featuring an LGBT woman as the main character won the National Book Award. In their praise, one of the judges said the novel “glows with desire and hums with sensuality as sapphic romance flashes against fear and intolerance.” During her acceptance speech, Malinda Lo talked about “diversity and inclusion and living in a time when many books are under siege from people advancing and attempting to enforce conservative views.” Community Outreach Team is hosting a booth for the church. It will be poker themed and everyone is encouraged to dress for the era. Please sign-up for a shift to help spread our message to as many people as possible. Sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. As always, send your submissions to news@redriveruu.org no later the deadline window. Emergency Preparedness is vital knowledge, at home, work, and church. Being aware of your surroundings and knowing what to do in case of a medical or weather emergency or even a hostile situation can give you the confidence to save lives, including your own. We will discuss the various types of emergencies you may face here at church, what to do during those emergencies and what the EP Team is planning to make our gathering place safer for everyone. The Committee on Ministry meets every 4th Sunday after service. Members are welcome to join us to discuss any aspect of church operations or concerns with those operations or with other members. Come join us for the social justice meetings. Sometimes we write postcards, sometimes we discuss events, sometimes we work on organization. Overeaters Anonymous (OA) is a community of people who support each other in order to recover from compulsive eating and food behaviors. We welcome everyone who feels they have a problem with food. Join the worship team meeting via zoom @ 989 0789 7878 This month’s movie is ‘Green Book’. Green Book is a 2018 American biographical comedy- In the Bronx in 1962, Italian-American bouncer Tony Lip searches for new employment while the Copacabana is closed for renovations. He is invited to an interview with Don Shirley, an African American pianist in need of a driver for his eight-week concert tour through the Midwest and Deep South. Don hires Tony on the strength of his references. They embark with plans to return to New York City on Christmas Eve. Don’s record label gives Tony a copy of The Negro Motorist Green Book, a guide for African American travelers that contains the addresses of those motels, restaurants, and filling stations that would serve them in the Jim Crow South.[7] Tony and Don clash as Tony feels uncomfortable being asked to act with more refinement, while haughty Don is displeased by Tony’s uncouth habits. As the tour progresses, Tony is impressed with Don’s talent on the piano and becomes increasingly appalled by the discriminatory treatment that Don receives from his hosts and the general public when he is not on stage. The plot gets ALOT thicker!! Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/ The team is arranging for CPR and AED training.
