Adult Forum – Emerson, Thoreau, & the Transcendentalist Movement – A Great Courses Series

Emerson, Thoreau, and the Transcendental MovementWithout Emerson and Thoreau (both were Unitarians) the United States would not have developed into the nation it has become. We would not believe in the power of the individual to the extent that we do, nor would we see nature at the center of one view of the American psyche.

If Emerson gave us a new view of America and American thinking, Thoreau gave us a new way of living and a new vision of each individual.

This course has 4 DVDs with a total of 24 talks. We will start this series of classes on January 4th 2026.

This course, taught by Professor Ashton Nichols Ph.D. of the University of Virginia, explores the philosophical and literary movement of American Transcendentalism through the lives and ideas of its two central figures, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau.
The course covers:
  • An introduction to the lives and ideas of Emerson and Thoreau.
  • The roots of American Transcendentalism, drawing on European and non-Western thought.
  • Emerson’s role as the intellectual “father” of the movement and his influence on American thought, education, and politics.
  • Thoreau as “an American original,” including his time at Walden Pond and his political views.
  • Other key figures in the movement, such as William Ellery Channing, Theodore Parker, Amos Bronson Alcott, and Louisa May Alcott.
  • How Transcendentalism emphasized the individual, intuition, the divine in nature, and a unique American spirituality.

Morning Worship - Today’s Discourse “Cosmic Humility" by Rev. Dr. Mark Y.A. Davies

In a universe with trillions of galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars, we should view our lives on this pale blue dot of a planet in a solar system on the edge of our galaxy with an appropriate amount of humility while embracing and treasuring the gift of experience that we all enjoy. What will it mean for us when we soon definitively discover that we are not alone and that the cosmos is teeming with life? We are not the center of the universe as so many past generations thought, but our lives and communities are nevertheless still important and possess inherent worth on this world that is our only home.

Morning Worship - Today’s Discourse “Ways to Remember the Holocaust” by The Worship Team & Walter Norris

This morning’s service is in our 5th Sunday format, even though it isn’t 5th Sunday.

This format features a speaker, Walter Norris, who is a docent at the Dallas Holocaust Museum and will talk to us about visiting the museum,  followed by an activity – painting stones with names of children who died in the Holocaust for the Upstander Stone Project which will be returned to the project and included in the Holocaust Garden of Hope in Kingwood Texas. Stones have long been and continue to be used as historical grave markers; Jewish people bring small stones to leave on their loved ones’ gravesites, as stones are permanent (as opposed to flowers) and serve as a reminder that memories of our loved ones last forever.

North Texas Unitarian Universalist Churches (NTUUC) Grand Celebration

NTUUC Celebration flyerREV

Hey there, amazing North Texas Unitarian Universalists!

Get ready to mark your calendars for a simply fabulous event coming your way! The North Texas Unitarian Universalist Churches (NTUUC) are throwing a grand Celebration, planned just for you and all our wonderful neighboring churches in the region.

Join us for an afternoon of connection, learning, and pure fun on Saturday, March 28th, from 2:30 to 6:30 PM.

What’s on the Agenda?

We’re kicking things off with a delightful Pie Social! But it’s more than just dessert; it’s a chance to mingle and swap brilliant ideas with friends from other congregations. You’ll get to pick a topic table and dive into engaging discussions about how different churches handle specific, important aspects of church life.

The topics up for a cozy chat over pie include:

  • Adult & Children’s RE: Sharing program and activity types.
  • Social Justice: Discussing activities, social action, and political interfacing.
  • Community Outreach: Creative ways to spread the word about your UU church.
  • Worship: Exploring design, order of service, and service variations.
  • Music: Best practices for selection, choirs, and oh-so-important copyright issues!
  • A/V & Production: Tips for streaming, uploading, and YouTube channels.
  • Food & Kitchen Activities: Sharing ideas for fellowship and food.
  • Facilities Management: The ins and outs of care, maintenance, and renovations.
  • Pastoral Care: Caring for the sick, reaching out to those who’ve been away, and hospital visits.
  • Stewardship/Fundraising: Smart ways to support our beloved community.

After our topic talks, we’ll gather for a warm welcome, sing some funny songs, and tackle the “BIG QUESTION” in group discussions before summarizing our collective wisdom.

The Grand Finale!
