1965 – President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act. Many Unitarian Universalists had participated in the protest marches from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, which paved the way for this historic change in civil rights for African-Americans. Three people were killed in the march: James Reeb, a Unitarian Universalist minister; Jimme Lee Jackson, an African-American church deacon, and Viola Liuzzo, a Unitarian Universalist layperson from Detroit.
