It was twenty-four years ago today (Wed, March 26, 1997) that the first gathering of religious liberals in Texoma witnessed Unitarian Universalist worship when 40+ people attended a UU worship service held in the Little Chapel at Austin College. With a brass ensemble, a sermon called “Why Is There No Shouting the the Sanctuary” and a sufficiently enthusiastic response from those who had given up their Wednesday evening to “go to church” the seeds were planted and over the next 24 months the group grew not only in numbers but also from meeting one Wednesday a month to every Sunday evening – for worship and a potluck supper. A permanent home in the UU Room at Grand Ave Presbyterian Church was arranged and Red River Unitarian Universalists became a permanent fixture.
Happy Anniversary, everyone!
